Cultivating happiness in pandemic

Updated: Jan 5, 2022

With the unfolding novel coronavirus pandemic leading to borders being shut, economic instability and people being confined to their homes, everyone is swamped by the state of the world at this moment. The suffering and misery that so many people around the globe are facing is devastating and there’s nothing that can erase that pain. But the good news is, even in the times of chronic stress and high levels of anxiety one can try to lift their mood by focusing on small things that bring happiness to them each day! Don’t forget that positivity can boost our immune system; it’s a smart strategy just like washing our hands or frequent use of sanitizers. But how does one actually boost happiness during a global pandemic?

Meditate: Meditation increases feel good neurochemicals, as it reduces stress hormones. One will actually foster inner joy by meditating even for five minutes.

Physical self-care or exercise: First step in boosting happiness is to take care of your body. Your physical experience will influence your emotional experience. Even light yoga or a quick walk in the corridor will create an upbeat happy mood.

Sleep well: Take extra measures to at least try to regulate sleeping pattern. It is good for physical and mental wellness.

Stay connected: We’re fortunate that we have developed technology to stay connected with people who aren’t nearby. Now’s also the time to look out for the loved ones who may not know how to use these technologies. Make sure they’re not left isolated.

Say thank you: Immerse yourself in gratitude not only by saying but also by writing down a list of things you’re grateful for. Thank the delivery person for the parcel, your partner for bringing you a cup of tea! One of the best ways to make yourself happy is to make others happy.

Sending gifts: Throughout human history gift giving has been a universal way of expressing love and care. The gifts need not be very expensive; all it matters is thought that counts. Even something as simple as a card will communicate your love.

In the middle of the global pandemic, where everything is uncertain, there is one thing that remains undisputed: EVERYONE LOVES GIFTS!

Our lives have not been so simple in this Covid phase. With the pandemic posing a threat, we couldn't even celebrate our birthdays or anniversaries the way we used to. But now that people have more or less adapted to the new normal, why not reach out and add a bit of cheer to each other's lives? Though nothing beats giving a hug to someone you love, you can still bring a smile on their faces by sending thoughtful gifts that will make up for the time you lost and celebrate milestones that have been missed.

“Happiness doesn’t result from what we get, but from what we give.” – Ben Carson
